Advancing Lunar Exploration with Industrial Automation
Yokogawa Electric Corporation has entered into agreements with Toyota Motor Corporation to co-develop a control platform for a manned pressurized rover, also known as the “Lunar Cruiser.” This rover, developed in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), represents Japan’s first independent manned space system. It aims to expand lunar surface exploration through both crewed and remote operations.
The Role of Reliable Control Systems in Space Projects
For decades, Yokogawa has delivered advanced control systems, PLCs, and measurement instruments to industries such as energy, chemicals, and factory automation. These technologies are recognized for their high reliability in harsh environments. Leveraging this expertise, Yokogawa was invited by Toyota to support the design and prototyping of the rover’s measurement and control platform.
From Conceptual Studies to Prototype Development
The new agreements move the collaboration beyond conceptual studies. Yokogawa will design and procure prototype control and battery measurement equipment for the rover. This platform must function reliably in extreme lunar conditions where stability, redundancy, and data accuracy are critical.
Long-Term Vision for Industrial and Space Applications
The rover project is scheduled for launch around 2031, but its impact extends further. Yokogawa plans to apply the insights gained from space R&D to strengthen its terrestrial product portfolio. Improved reliability in control systems and distributed control systems (DCS) will benefit industries like power generation, petrochemicals, and smart manufacturing.

Leveraging Harsh Environment Experience for New Solutions
Yokogawa’s technologies have already proven effective in demanding locations such as polar regions and deep-sea research. The lunar project pushes these boundaries further, offering opportunities to enhance automation systems for both space and earth. This approach reflects a growing trend: solutions engineered for extreme conditions often improve resilience in industrial environments.
Expert Commentary: Bridging Space and Factory Automation
The collaboration illustrates how industrial automation expertise can accelerate space exploration. Toyota brings mobility innovation, while Yokogawa contributes advanced measurement and control systems. Together, they create a platform that demonstrates the convergence of automotive engineering, space technology, and industrial control. For automation professionals, this signals new business opportunities in aerospace and cross-industry innovation.
Application Scenarios: From Lunar Rovers to Smart Factories
While the immediate focus is the Lunar Cruiser, the resulting technologies could improve:
-
Battery monitoring systems in renewable energy plants.
-
Advanced PLC and DCS platforms for oil and gas automation.
-
Remote operations in hazardous industrial zones.
-
Predictive maintenance tools in connected factories.
